Good Morning America produced another segment on Workplace Bullying. See our complete media appearances list to see other GMA appearances.
They cited and showed the Workplace Bullying Institute-Zogby International survey and some of its findings.
They featured Dr. Ruth Namie, co-founder of the Workplace Bullying Institute though they failed to indentify her as such.
The story also indicated that 13 states have introduced anti-bullying legislation since 2003. All of those efforts are made possible by volunteer Citizen Lobbyists directed by the Workplace Bullying Legislative Campaign.
The TV segment concluded in studio with ABC "Workplace Contributor" Tory Johnson.
Unfortunately, because she is not an expert in bullying at work, she gave poor advice.
To see what the experts actually recommend, see the WBI 3-step process.
Here are Johnson's suggestions to stop bullying and our italicized statements about why they don't work.
Stop it on the spot: If you can, nip it on the spot.
-
Actually, if Targets were bullyproof, they would immediately respond aggressively to aggression when it was launched against them. However, Targets are targets for several reasons, including being blessed with a non-confrontive nature. Sadly, that opens the door to psychological assaults. WBI research shows that Targets suffer an average of 22 months, with a full 33% suffering over one year. By the time Targets discover their plight, much time has passed and they are on the road to ill-health.
People who bully do it because they can, and they won't stop until someone stops them. So if you're feeling strong, tell them firmly and directly, "Don't speak to me that way. I'm professional and cordial to you, and I expect the same in return."
-
Bullies scoff at such rational arguments. Bullying is about abuse of power, authority and the rights of others. The problem with this suggestion is that we should not make Targets responsible for stopping the bullying which is completely and unilaterally in bullies' control. Bullies decide who to target, what methods to use, when to start and to stop, and how to lie about why they do what they do. As a society, we stopped making battered spouses try to make the violence stop. We criminalized the abuse and allow police and the criminal justice system to intervene.
Bullying is domestic violence where the abuser is on the payroll.
Confront the bully calmly.
-
If Targets could confront naturally and spontaneously, they would be among the 63% who have not been bullied at work. How can one be calm if one is traumatized. Yes, Tory, traumatized. Thirty per cent of bullied women suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Be calm, get real! They would be bullyproof. People who do successfully confront were never actually Targets (and good for them).
Tory Johnson and mainstream media "workplace contributors" are too timid to challenge corporate and government employers to take responsibility for the work environment they create and sustain that is often toxic and injurious to employee health. Let's stop coddling employers who betray workers' trust and allow bullying to occur on-site with impunity! -- WBI
