Toxic Workplaces: Hazardous for Employers & Employees

2022 US Surgeon General's Framework

Toxic workplaces, according to the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2022 framework for workplace mental health and well-being, are DISRESPECTFUL, NON-INCLUSIVE, UNETHICAL, CUTTHROAT, and ABUSIVE.

Workplace bullying, abusive conduct, is the key predictor of toxicity. Bullying is hazardous to employee health — both physical and mental — greater than sexual harassment or discriminatory mistreatment.

The safety workers need is not just physical, it is psychological and psychosocial. Workers deserve to be free from risks of harmful consequences of threats, intimidation and humiliation as well as to work without risk of emotional injury.

Origins of Toxicity

A record of impunity for aggressors. A history of rewarding it, however inadvertent. Rationalizing their destructive behavior with “she/he’s brilliant, but …” Chasing the personality fix of “anger management.” Pronouncements of “respect for all individuals” distrusted by employees. Focus on liability for only discriminatory misconduct. Getting conned by charismatic, scheming people posing as “indispensable.”

Ask any Gen-Z or late Millenial, raised on years of anti-bullying messages in school, if they will tolerate the irrational idiocy of abusive conduct. They are walking away rather than enduring abuse.
