The WBI Healthy Workplace Policy Writing Guide

A Policy prohibiting the misconduct is a necessary first step. Current policies comply with state and federal nondiscrimination laws. They are minimalist and make only individuals who enjoy protected status (disadvantaged) group membership eligible to complain. In one in five cases of bullying, illegal discrimination is present. The vast majority of situations do not involve illegality.

Research finds that bullying, though legal and much more prevalent than sexual harassment or discrimination or a hostile work environment, harms the mental and physical well being of its victims than do illegal conduct. Therefore, the phrase that bullying “does not rise to the level of harassment” is wrong. The reality is that illegal harassment rarely rising to harm people as much as workplace bullying — legal abusive conduct.

Good employers want to offer more protections for employees — both for the benefit of workers and out of self-interest to reduce the costs of turnover, absenteeism, litigation and other preventable expenses. Crafting a policy to address the principal contributor to toxic workplaces makes sense, whether or not laws compel action. Do the right thing for the right reasons.

Employee psychological safety and freedom from emotional injuries for employees are more likely with faithful enforcement of the Policy. Give it teeth. In turn, employee trust and loyalty rise.

Our digital Healthy Workplace Policy Writing Guide leads a group designated by you to create a world-class set of policy and procedures.

The proprietary process forces a lively debate about values and the level of commitment by participants. And the examples have to be unique to your workplace. No one-size-fits-all sample policy can that.

Dr. Gary Namie, on video, facilitates the writing process using proprietary questions that the group answers in real time. It’s as if he’s in the room with you!

All requisite tutorials, instructions, facilitation by video and sample language are included in the package to create a custom outcome for the organization. With our help, your writing group completes the task. Completion time depends on the group’s ability to reach consensus on terms.

Long-term prevention and correction of bullying/abusive conduct are the goals.
